Winter’s Bone

This was really, REALLY good. Quiet and gently paced, with an ever-present sense of menace rather than outright terror, Jennifer Lawrence’s character (Ree) is forced to search for her criminal (meth cooking) father since he hasn’t turned up for a trial and has given their house as bond. If she can’t force him to turn himself in, or else prove him dead, everything they have will be lost, and this falls on the 17 year old eldest daughter as her mother has lost her mind, and her young brother and sister rely on her to keep everything running. But the scary neighbours don’t want to tell…

Despite the wintry and grey landscape, the tone of this is similar to the Australian Animal Kingdom earlier this year, with a strong but innocent protagonist trying to negotiate their way around a hostile criminal fraternity run by a powerful matriarch.
